FLITWICK BLUEBELL WOOD

FLITWICK WOOD

This is a walk around Flitwick Wood, which should be beautiful in early May when the bluebells are in bloom.  I have given directions from Tesco Car Park – this probably means that the walk lasts a little over an hour (it is, however on the flat).  If it is felt that is too long a walk start at point     2           (and park on Manor Road,  by Bluebell Close, postbox and dog waste bin) and the walk is reduced to about 50 minutes.  You may, however, prefer to linger.  OS Explorer 193

Route

1 Begin Tesco Car Park. Leave by alleyway to side of Tesco and walk along Kendal Drive, bear right, go straight and cross road into Malham Close. Pass school. Continue straight and slightly uphill into Bluebell Close.  Here there is a green, bear left across the green and continue along the alleyway (straight and slightly uphill).

2 Cross Road (Manor Road – see above).  Straight across and continue along alleyway.  Cross next minor road (Byron Crescent) and take the alleyway into the wood. Turn left onto the footpath;  walk along here for a short distance and turn left into the wood and immediately right.

3  From now on we basically just follow the paths along the edge of the wood, so it is less complicated than these directions sound.  So, when entering wood immediately bear right as above.  At crossroad of footpaths, where there is an exit on right, keep straight on.  Bear right at the next slight junction.  By the next kissing gate on the right, cross and keep straight on with the fence on the right.

4  The footpath then bears round to the left (where there is a further kissing gate on the right).  Follow the footpath round to the left and continue following the twists and turns.   Keep going and at the eventual edge of the wood turn left. Follow the path along the edge of the wood with the fence on the right.  Eventually the footpath bears left at a junction go straight across (houses are now on the right).

5 At the next junction turn left (keep the houses over on the right).  Bear with the footpath all the way round here – houses on right – following the edge of the wood.  Ignore the gate exit on the right.

6  Pass by a seat and reach a big gate by a signpost and board.  Bear left here again.  Keep the blackthorn hedge on the right.  Ignore the turning on the right with the kissing gate.  Take the right hand spur which takes us back to the original footpath where we turn right.

7  In 200 yards along the original footpath turn right  into Byron Crescent and retrace original steps.
