Ilam Youth Hostel is a gem, a 17th Century Gothic Manor, hidden amongst the Derbyshire dales, alongside the River Dove.
I spent the night before my pilgrimage there and was able to explore the building and grounds and partake of tea in the National Trust Tea Rooms! The settlement grew up around the site of a holy well with reputed healing qualities dedicated to St Bertram (a 7th Century prince).
There is also a bridge over the river in his name.
I rested that night in my bunk bed and was well prepared to begin my pilgrimage the next morning.
