Walking the Pilgrims’ Way: An overview
In September 2016 I walked the Pilgrims’ Way from Winchester to Canterbury as a Gratitude Walk and to raise money for Leighton Buzzard Mencap Holiday Club (see further post here) and my posts about what it is like to walk the Pilgrims’ Way are set out above. I discuss my preparations, what I have learnt about the Pilgrims’ Way and my adventures en route. One of the aims of this blog is to ponder on the concept of gratitude and how feeling and expressing it affects our mental, physical and spiritual well-being. The route from Winchester to Canterbury is shown below. (The black routes are of other walks I have completed, including The Ridgeway National Trail). The route consists of the St Swithun’s Way from Winchester to Farnham and the North Downs Way from Farnham to Canterbury
The Route
This video link here is absolutely essential viewing. A film About the Pilgrims’ Way made in 1956. I know that SO much will have changed, particularly with the coming of the motorways and that the narrator’s grumblings about “subtopia” will be nothing as compared to now. But hopefully some of the beauty will remain. I will hope to visit the Hospital of St Cross church in Winchester referred to at 7.13 when they talk of the wayfarer’s dole and I am actually staying at the Falstaff Inn in Canterbury featured at about 30 minutes after completing my pilgrimage
Whilst recently walking in St Albans I found these scallop shells embedded into a wall near the Cathedral. I will be looking out for some during my gratutide walk.
